Savings certificates (Sanchayapatra): rates and how to buy
Updated: 5 Nov 2026 · 3 min read
A savings certificate (Sanchayapatra) is a government bond: you lend the state money and it pays profit at a fixed rate. Rates are usually above bank deposits, and the risk is low. The National Savings Directorate runs them; you buy them at banks, post offices and savings bureaus.
Which certificate is for whom
- 5-year Bangladesh Sanchayapatra: open to anyone; profit at maturity.
- 3-monthly profit-bearing Sanchayapatra: 3-year term, profit every three months; popular for a regular income.
- Paribar (family) Sanchayapatra: for certain groups (such as women and senior citizens); profit every month.
- Pensioner Sanchayapatra: for retired government employees’ retirement benefits.
- Post office savings bank term account: a 3-year deposit at the post office.
Who may buy which, and how much, is set by the directorate’s rules; ask at the counter before you buy.
Profit rates: they rise year by year
Today’s rates were set by the notice of 30 June 2025 and later kept in force, twice, until 31 December 2026. Each year’s rate is a little higher than the last, and rates are slightly higher while your total investment is up to Tk 7.5 lakh:
| Certificate | Up to Tk 7.5 lakh: year 1 → maturity | Over Tk 7.5 lakh: year 1 → maturity |
|---|---|---|
| 5-year Bangladesh Sanchayapatra | 9.74% → 11.83% | 9.72% → 11.80% |
| 3-monthly profit-bearing | 10.65% → 11.82% | 10.60% → 11.77% |
| Pensioner Sanchayapatra | 9.84% → 11.98% | 9.72% → 11.80% |
| Paribar Sanchayapatra | 9.81% → 11.93% | 9.72% → 11.80% |
| Post office term account | 10.65% → 11.82% | 10.60% → 11.77% |
Every year’s rate and the latest notice are on savings certificate rates.
Why the rate changes each year
Cash a certificate in early and the lower early-year rates apply; hold it to maturity and you earn the higher final-year rate. That rewards keeping it to the end, so money you may need sooner is better kept out of long-term certificates.
Tax and paperwork
- Tax is deducted at source from the profit. The rate depends on whether you have a TIN and on the latest income tax rules; reports put it at usually 10% with a TIN and higher without. The tax taken can be adjusted in your annual return.
- Above a certain amount you need proof of a filed tax return. That threshold has changed several times, so check the current one at the counter or in the directorate’s notice.
- You need your national ID, a bank account and a nominee’s details; profit and principal are paid straight into the bank account.
